What is agape love?

Agape is a Greek word for love used in the New Testament. Christians often use it to describe a generous, faithful love that seeks another person’s well-being, rather than depending only on attraction or what we receive in return.

John 3:16 describes God’s love through the gift of his Son. Romans 5:8 points to Christ’s sacrifice as the demonstration of that love. First John 4:9–11 connects God’s love for us with our calling to love each other.

In 1 Corinthians 13:4–7, love is described through patience, kindness, humility, and perseverance. These passages help us see love as something we practice, not simply something we feel.

What does agape love look like?

It can look like listening patiently, showing up for someone who needs support, serving without seeking recognition, or choosing honesty and compassion in a difficult conversation. Loving someone does not mean excusing harm or abandoning healthy boundaries.

4. Practice forgiveness alongside honesty, accountability, and wise boundaries.

Does God love me?

The Christian message begins with God’s initiative in loving people. You do not need to have every question answered before exploring that message. Bring your doubts, your story, and your questions as you read Scripture and talk with others.
